The United Nations General Assembly opened its 81st regular session in New York on September 8, beginning a new year of multilateral negotiations involving all 193 member states.
Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh assumed the presidency of the Assembly, succeeding Annalena Baerbock after the formal closure of the 80th session.
The session’s theme—“Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”—places institutional credibility and practical cooperation at the centre of its work.
Delegations will address peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, human rights, humanitarian emergencies and reform of the international system.
The high-level general debate is scheduled to begin on September 22, alongside meetings on development, climate transition, pandemic preparedness, sea-level rise and nuclear disarmament.
Unlike the Security Council, every UN member state has one vote in the General Assembly, making it the organisation’s broadest forum for debate and collective standard-setting.
