Historic architecture in Yemen, illustrating the communities affected by the humanitarian emergency

The United Nations warned on 23 October 2026 that the humanitarian situation in Taiz City, Yemen, is deteriorating rapidly as aid agencies report that assistance is being blocked from entering. The city has been encircled by de facto Houthi forces fighting government troops along Yemen’s west coast.

Humanitarian organisations say restrictions on access make it harder to deliver essential supplies to families caught in the conflict. Food, clean water, medicine and emergency health services are urgently needed by civilians affected by the fighting.

The latest warning adds to years of displacement, economic hardship and weakened public services across Yemen. Families already struggling to meet basic needs face further risks when commercial supplies and humanitarian relief cannot move freely.

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners continue to stress that civilians must be protected and relief workers allowed to operate safely. Parties to the conflict are required under international humanitarian law to facilitate rapid and unimpeded humanitarian assistance for civilians in need.

Access constraints can also complicate efforts to assess needs and identify the most vulnerable households. Aid agencies warn that delays may worsen malnutrition, interrupt medical treatment and leave displaced people without adequate shelter.

International efforts to reduce the fighting remain essential, but humanitarian access cannot wait for a comprehensive political settlement. The UN’s repeated calls for safe routes and protection of civilians are intended to prevent further deterioration in living conditions.

The situation in Taiz illustrates the wider challenge of reaching people in areas affected by conflict throughout Yemen. Humanitarian agencies are urging all parties to remove obstacles to relief deliveries and respect their obligations to civilians.
