Britain’s chief of defence staff has said that more than 500,000 Russian military personnel have been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton also cited an estimate of approximately 1.5 million total Russian casualties when wounded and missing personnel are included.
The figure represents a British assessment rather than an independently verified count, and Russia does not publish comprehensive current battlefield-loss data.
Open-source researchers using death notices, inheritance records and cemetery information have generally produced lower confirmed totals while warning that their lists are incomplete.
The UK assessment comes as both Russia and Ukraine expand long-range drone operations against fuel, industrial and logistics infrastructure far behind the front line.
The scale of military losses remains politically sensitive for both governments, and Ukraine also provides only limited information about its own personnel killed or wounded.
