People in South Sudan, accompanying coverage of regional conflict and humanitarian needs

The United Nations has condemned a deadly wave of drone strikes in Sudan, warning that civilians continue to pay a heavy price as the conflict drives displacement and hunger. UN reporting on 21 October said attacks on Monday killed and injured dozens of people.

The latest incidents add to a pattern of violence that has devastated communities, damaged essential services and forced families to leave their homes. The UN has repeatedly called on all parties to take every feasible precaution to protect civilians.

Drone warfare presents particular risks when attacks occur in populated areas or near civilian infrastructure. International humanitarian law requires parties to distinguish between civilians and combatants and to avoid attacks expected to cause excessive civilian harm.

The humanitarian consequences are severe. Displaced people often arrive in locations where food, clean water, shelter and medical services are already scarce, while aid organisations face insecurity and logistical barriers to reaching those most in need.

UN officials have urged the parties to stop attacks against civilians, respect their obligations under international law and allow humanitarian workers safe passage. Independent reporting and credible investigations into alleged violations are also important to support accountability.

Regional and international diplomatic efforts are continuing, including discussions in Geneva aimed at finding a path toward a ceasefire and a transition to peaceful governance. Humanitarian organisations stress that these efforts must translate into concrete protection for civilians on the ground.

The UN says an end to the fighting is essential to reduce suffering and enable a sustained humanitarian response. Without a cessation of hostilities and reliable access, displacement and food insecurity are likely to remain acute.
