13 September 2026 — At least 46,000 people have been displaced by renewed fighting between Houthi forces and pro-government units in southwestern Yemen, according to the United Nations.
The International Organization for Migration said the number was rising rapidly as families fled areas around Taiz, Hodeidah and the strategically important Red Sea coast.
Many of those uprooted have already experienced displacement earlier in Yemen’s long conflict and are leaving with few possessions or resources.
IOM called on all parties to protect civilians, humanitarian workers and relief facilities, and to guarantee safe, unimpeded access for aid deliveries.
The UN also expressed concern after a humanitarian compound in Mokha was seized; personnel had left beforehand and were reported safe and accounted for.
IOM displacement tracking recorded 13,500 people newly displaced between 30 August and 5 September, with the largest movements reported in Taiz Governorate.
The sharp increase compounds a humanitarian emergency already marked by damaged services, lost incomes and limited access to food, water and health care.
