GENEVA, 16 October 2026 — UNICEF has warned that the humanitarian situation facing children in Gaza remains critical, with hundreds of thousands still displaced and many families preparing for another winter in makeshift shelters.

At a United Nations press briefing in Geneva, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said around 800,000 children remained displaced, many living in tents or damaged buildings that offer inadequate protection from rain, cold and disease.

The agency said that although the ceasefire has enabled some improvement in humanitarian access and food security, the gains remain fragile. Disruptions to commercial deliveries risk reducing the availability of food and other basic goods for families already heavily dependent on assistance.

UNICEF also highlighted the psychological toll of prolonged conflict. Nearly every child needs some form of mental-health support, while many have lost relatives, homes, access to education and the stable routines essential to recovery.

The agency urged that all crossings remain open and that humanitarian and commercial supplies enter in a continuous, predictable manner. Aid workers say shelter, sanitation, healthcare and protection services must also be strengthened before winter conditions worsen.

The warning underlines that a ceasefire alone cannot meet children’s needs without sustained access, safe living conditions and long-term recovery support. Humanitarian agencies continue to call for the protection of civilians and unhindered delivery of essential goods.
