The impact caused a fire and local authorities evacuated the crew, while investigators had not publicly identified who launched the projectile.
Iranian state media separately reported that an Iranian commercial ship was hit near Qeshm Island, killing one crew member and wounding four; it was not immediately clear whether both reports described the same vessel.
The incident adds to pressure on one of the world’s most important energy corridors as commercial traffic remains constrained by the wider regional conflict.
Concern also intensified after Saudi Arabia temporarily closed its East-West oil pipeline following a separate drone attack, threatening a route used to bypass disruption in Hormuz.
Oil markets are closely watching the security situation because the Saudi pipeline had been carrying an estimated four to five million barrels per day.
With no immediate claim of responsibility, the available evidence supports caution: the strike is confirmed by maritime monitoring, but attribution remains unresolved.
