16 September 2026 — United Nations health officials say the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is showing limited progress, but it remains too early to conclude that the outbreak has peaked.
Updated national data reported 7,258 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths by 14 September, making the epidemic one of the deadliest Ebola outbreaks recorded.
Daily infections have declined from roughly 120 at the mid-August peak to around 80, while several affected health zones have passed more than 22 days without a new case.
The improvement is uneven: the situation in North Kivu remains alarming because of continuing transmission, population movement and difficult security conditions.
WHO has said the outbreak has expanded geographically across multiple provinces, while stronger surveillance and laboratory testing have also contributed to the rising cumulative case count.
Health agencies continue to emphasize isolation, contact tracing, safe treatment and community engagement as essential measures for stopping transmission.
Officials are therefore describing the latest trend as cautious progress rather than victory, warning that sustained international assistance remains necessary.
