16 September 2026 — UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has called for international investigators to receive access to Gaza as recovery teams continue finding bodies beneath destroyed buildings.
Palestinian Civil Defence figures cited by the UN say more than 630 bodies and other human remains were recovered between November 2025 and September 2026.
More than 8,000 people are still believed to be missing under rubble, although access limitations and the absence of heavy equipment make a full accounting difficult.
Türk said the remains appear to include entire families, with women and children comprising many of the victims recovered from residential sites.
He stressed that evidence, forensic information and biological samples must be preserved so families can identify relatives and legal investigations can establish how they died.
The High Commissioner said the discoveries renew serious concerns about compliance with international humanitarian law and the possibility that war crimes were committed.
Israel has maintained that its operations comply with international law and disputes allegations that it deliberately targeted civilians; the UN has called for independent investigation and accountability wherever violations are established.
