16 September 2026 — Ukraine is testing a domestically developed interceptor designed to destroy Russian attack drones, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following a successful trial.
The system reportedly struck and destroyed an Iranian-designed Shahed-type drone, although Zelenskyy said further technical refinement is still required.
Ukraine’s military separately reported neutralizing 187 airborne targets during an overnight Russian assault involving around 200 drones.
Zelenskyy said approximately 93 percent of the Russian drones were intercepted, describing the rate as significant but insufficient for complete protection.
Kyiv has expanded interceptor-drone development because the systems can be considerably cheaper than firing scarce conventional air-defence missiles at mass-produced attack drones.
Ukraine continues to face greater difficulty against ballistic missiles and has asked its international partners to provide additional interceptor supplies and support a European air-defence programme.
Claims about battlefield interception rates are based primarily on Ukrainian military reporting and cannot always be independently verified during active operations.
