16 September 2026 — Saudi Arabia says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace.
The Saudi-led coalition said the interception occurred on Tuesday evening and described the protection of Mecca, Medina and pilgrims as a security “red line.”
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki characterized the incident as the second attempt to target Mecca, referring to an earlier missile launch in 2017.
A Houthi spokesman rejected the Saudi allegation and denied that the movement had targeted Mecca or another religious site.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the reported attack, while Saudi authorities increased security alerts following a week of missile and drone incidents.
The episode comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen and broader regional instability affecting Saudi cities, energy facilities and shipping routes near Bab el-Mandeb.
The interception itself was announced by Saudi authorities; because the parties dispute the intended target, attribution about Mecca remains presented as a Saudi claim rather than an independently established fact.
