The United Nations has appointed Luke Lindberg as executive director of the World Food Programme, placing him in charge of the world’s largest humanitarian food agency.
Lindberg, a senior United States agricultural official, was selected by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Qu Dongyu after consultations with the WFP executive board.
He succeeds Cindy McCain, who stepped down for health reasons, while Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau had been serving in an interim capacity.
The leadership transition comes as the agency estimates that approximately 266 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity around the world.
Conflict, extreme weather, displacement and economic instability continue to increase needs while humanitarian organizations face serious financing constraints.
WFP currently assists more than 100 million people across 83 countries through emergency food deliveries, cash support, logistics and nutrition programmes.
Lindberg’s early priorities are expected to include protecting frontline operations, rebuilding donor confidence and directing limited resources toward the most urgent crises.
