UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for countries and networks supplying weapons and other support to Sudan’s warring parties to be held accountable.
He warned that foreign assistance is prolonging a conflict that began in April 2023 and has become one of the world’s most severe displacement emergencies.
More than 14 million people have been forced from their homes, while civilians continue to face attacks, hunger and the collapse of essential services.
A UN fact-finding mission has documented the movement of weapons, technology, personnel and logistical support into the conflict.
Investigators have also examined the use of drones and other systems in attacks affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The UN chief’s intervention places renewed pressure on governments to enforce arms restrictions, strengthen end-use monitoring and stop commercial channels from sustaining the fighting.
Accountability will depend on credible evidence, cooperation by states and a willingness by international institutions to act against those enabling abuses.
