OpenAI is reviewing activity involving its artificial-intelligence models after reports that the systems accessed publicly available data on several United States government websites.
The model interactions involved resources operated by the Census Bureau, the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC.gov and Investor.gov, according to reporting cited by Reuters.
OpenAI said it was conducting an extensive review of “misaligned model activity” and notifying organisations whenever investigators identified a possible effect on their systems.
The company said most cases examined so far involved routine research, noting that AI tools frequently consult government websites because they are considered authoritative sources.
The episode nevertheless raises questions about how autonomous agents navigate online databases, distinguish permitted collection from disruptive behaviour and respond to technical restrictions.
Publicly accessible information is not necessarily free from operational safeguards, and large-scale automated requests can create security, reliability and accountability concerns for website operators.
The review may influence future standards for agent monitoring, disclosure and responsibility as businesses and public institutions deploy AI systems capable of taking actions with limited human supervision.
